Be Supporter, Not Bodyguard: This Bhai Dooj


When we were kids, often my brother asked my mother,” IS EVERY FETIVAL IS FOR GIRLS, EVERYTIME WE NEED TO GIVE HER MONEY AND PROMISE TO PROTECT HER.” This question is frequently asked by everyone who enjoys the warmth of these festivals. These not only gives depth to our relations but also a promise to protect every time, when we need our brother. But it is not every time, it happens. No, I need my brother for the bond we share, not as a bodyguard, but my support. 


“BHAIYA, THIS THE THREAD OF PROMISE YOU NEED TO PROTECT EVERYTIME.”, While tying thread she questioned to her brother with a pleasing eyes. “YES, I WILL DO ONLY ON ONE CONDITION YOU WILL GIVE HALF SHARE IN THIS MONEY.” He teased sister. Everyone over there laughed.


 After some years he went abroad, and one fine day while video call he noticed some scars on his sister’s face. And he asked if what happened. “NOTHING MUCH BHAIYA, MET WITH AN ACCIDENT YESTERDAY, SO MAY BE….. HAVE YOU GOT RAKHI, PLEASE TIE THAT.” He believed because he knew his sister will never lie.


In fact her heart was saying “SAVE ME, BHAIYA. I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO. EVEN MY PARENTS WANT ME TO BE WITH HIM, WHO IS AN ANIMAL, INDEED. HE BEATS ME; HE RAPES ME EVERY NOW AND THEN. I FEEL HELPLESS.”” I AM NOT TELLING YOU AS YOU HAVE YOUR FAMILY. IF I TELL YOU HE WILL NOT SPARE ME AND WILL TRY TO HURT YOU AND YOUR FAMILY TOO. I WANT TO PROTECT THE PRESTIGE OF MY PARENTS AND YOU FAMILY’S HAPPINESS.”


This is the bitter truth that on the name of prestige of family and happiness of someone else’s family, we try to be keep quit. Why don’t we make our DAUGHTERS SO STRONG THAT THEY MUST KNOW HOW TO PROTECT HER DIGNITY FIRST. IT’S NOT ONLY HER RESPECT BUT YOUR’S TOO. TRY TO CHANGE THE MENTALITY.


I am lucky to have my brother who always taught to recognize my potentials and work on them. He is very practical in his approach and every brother must try to be support her not try to be the body guard. We must teach our sisters how to protect her. Because with time, the priorities will change, not every time brother can protect. Not every time she will utter her heart. 


THIS BHAI DOOJ PROMISES YOUR SISTERS THAT YOU WILL SUPPORT THEM. YOU WILL TRY THAT SHE WILL FEEL SECURE, NOT BECAUSE OF YOUR PRESENCE ONLY BUT BECAUSE SHE IS STRONG ENOUGH TO PROTECT HER. FEEL THE CHANGE WHEN NO ONE WILL DARE TO HARASS OR MOLEST HER BECAUSE OF HER GENDER.

They don’t work for their self content rather put their efforts for materialistic pleasures. They simply want to show what they can do just to display to other people and start to depose their energies to please others.
